WOMAN When I'm stressed, everything's a mess. Nothing comes out the way I want it to. WOMAN 2 I find it really overwhelming. I get, like, really stressed and anxious and I kind of struggle to focus on other things. WOMAN 3 I didn't think that they would understand the stress I was in or why I was stressed. ONSCREEN TEXT What I wish my parents knew about...STRESS. WOMAN 3 I guess stress, for me, would be a mixture of school, so that's uni, and my own personal expectations of myself. WOMAN A lot of academic- and study-related stress is definitely something that I experienced. WOMAN 2 Often when you're stressed, even if you don't mean to, you can take it out on the people you're closest to. So, often if I'm stressed, I might be a little bit short with my parents. Yeah, not be as pleasant to be around. WOMAN Internally, I might be struggling. You don't see it on the outside, which is another thing. I don't always express it to my parents. WOMAN 3 Sometimes in times of extreme stress, I tend to break down. Kind of shut myself off from the world. WOMAN For my parents, I think, the first thing to do, for me, is just to address it. Just to kind of let them know, "Hey, this is how I'm feeling. I don't know what to do with it. I don't know if you can help. But I need to tell you that this is what's going on." WOMAN 3 I told my mum, "I'm feeling stressed. Can you help me?" And she's like, "OK. What can I do for you? Do you want food? Do you want me to help you? Do you want to take a walk around the block?" That kind of thing. WOMAN 2 I think my mum's been really great when I've been stressed. She's always like, you know, "Let's get you out of the house. Let's go do something fun. Let's, you know, go shopping or go have lunch or do something to distract you," which has really helped me. My mum and my dad always tell me, You can't control how the external influences may impact you. But what you can control is how you deal with it." WOMAN 3 When you're stressed, find something that you enjoy and do it. Play a video game, watch a movie, play music, dance like crazy in your room like no-one's watching. When you come back to the thing that stresses you, it'll become less.
