[Mum/Tammy Hatch] I think it's very important to keep the relationship with your kids; and the communication is very important [on-screen title] How to suport your child's dreams [Daughter/Rebecca Hatch] Hi, my name's Rebecca Hatch. I'm 18 years old and I'm a singer-songwriter from Western Sydney, and when I was 16 I won Triple J's Unearthed High Indigenous Initiative at the National Indigenous Music Awards. [Tammy] Hi, I'm Tammy Hatch. I am Rebecca's mum, I'm also her manager. Rebecca is the youngest of my three children. [Rebecca] I remember I told my mom when I was younger, and I told my mum "I want to do music." [Tammy] I always say to Rebecca: "Have a go at anything that comes your way. You will find something that you like – if you miss it, you're gonna regret it for the rest of your life. You give it a go then you'll know if you like it or not. [Rebecca] She really took me seriously and she took me to lessons and my whole family started realising that "oh, this isn't just a hobby that she wants to do something that she really wants to take seriously." I guess doing my shows and stuff made them realise that. [Tammy] It's very important to support their dream and encourage; see what their passion is, because it's what they want not what we want. To me , that is very important. [Rebecca] It really helped to have a parent, both my parents, to really believe in what I wanted to do. Being really open of her, built our bond and our relationship and trust, [Tammy] Just tell them exactly what you think is best for them, but let them choose – let them choose because sometimes when they make the mistake they learn from it. [Rebecca] If something happens, say if I did something really bad, I probably would tell my mum. No matter how angry she gets, I knew she always has my back at the end of the day. My mother will always be there for me. [Tammy] Make them feel that they can come to you without you judging them. Like my kids; every morning I text them, even my son, now he's a doctor. I still message them "Have a good day", and just because they're older, they still sometimes feel depressed, feel down and you need that...knowing that someone else cares, that lifts them up.
